Recruiting

The Royal Canadian Army Cadets is a federally-sponsored program for young men and women 12-19 years old. Most leave with a great sense of accomplishment, life-long friends and once-in-a-lifetime experiences. There is no cost to join.

We meet on Tuesday nights from 6:45 to 9:15 at Oakville Armoury, 90 Thomas Street. If you are interested in joining, come to the armoury on any Tuesday night. You may want to phone or e-mail to confirm that we will be available on the night you wish to visit.

Local Training

During the school year, we meet one or two nights per week and at least one weekend per month. You will progress through the army cadet training program, first learning the basic skills before moving on to learn how to lead and instruct other cadets.

The army cadet local training program includes drill, bushcraft, map and compass, instructional techniques, leadership and physical fitness.

Summer Training

Army cadets can attend summer camp at training centres located across Canada. Courses range from 2 to 8 weeks in length. All summer training is completely paid for by the Department of National Defence.

Army cadets also have the opportunity to participate in a number of international exchanges. The available destinations include Scotland, Wales, England, Germany and the USA.

Other courses include the Canadian Forces Basic Parachutist Course, the RCAC National Rifle Team, Leadership and Challenge (Canoeing, hiking, rock climbing and glacier training in Banff, Alberta) and advanced band courses.

Summer Employment

Senior cadets can apply for staff positions at cadet training centres, which offers them seven weeks of employment during the summer. Cadets employed in leadership positions may be placed in command of a unit ranging in size from a section (10 cadets) to a battalion (2000 cadets). Other jobs are available for those with experience in physical recreation, rock climbing, swimming and administration work.

This is just an outline of the army cadet experience. If you have any questions, please contact us by clicking here to email the Commanding Officer with any questions you have.
